I've never run JFK but I've run now run 25 marathons and 41 Ulramarathons.
I never train more than 20 miles. I race quite frequently though. So I might do a 50K, pre 50 mile race. I'd also plan walking breaks on a course like this
(relatively flat) Normally in the races I do there are major hills throughout so I just walk all the hills.

If you wanted to finish in the top 25% of so you would need major mileage.
I've done up to 100K on less than 40 miles/week. I don't care if I finish somewhere in the middle.

I was planning on running JFK this year, but unfortunately I cant get off because of scheduling issues at work. I have registered for the Tussey Mountainback 50 instead. It is only $70 is you do it unsupported and use the aid stations and drop bags. If you use a support crew it is $100. It is just outside of State College, Pa with lots of lodging and a great after race party. If you need more info, go to Welcome to the Tussey Mountainback Race Site. It is also the host of the 2010 USATF 50 mile championships. Very challenging course, but beautiful through Rothrock State Forest.
