I love to run trails but have sustained a toe injury from downhills. It fits the turf toe description and my toenail is also black. I tried running with a stiffer shoe and I wondered if it may have been too tight. I am not running for three weeks to see if it mends and it is in week two and still sore. Not as bad. I am running wrong or is it more likely the shoe?
I don't know the answer to that but I can tell you that after lots of ****yzing I have realized I get turf toe from stiffer shoes, but that's just me. I'm sorry you are going through that, I hope you're back out running soon.

the only thing I can think to do is keep those toe nails just as short as you can.. the shorter the better....

Great advice guys thanks, I think you both may be right. I never gave the toe nail much thought as I would if I were skiing. It probably applies since I HAVE to keep them short wearing ski boots. The shoe I started wearing towards the end of my training for trail was definitely stiffer. Thanks again and hope to be running in a week or two.
well it could be your shoes. if your toenail is black then you need more toe room. ice your toe and take a look at your shoes. I always wear a half size up. the keeping your nails short is a great idea.
