Warrior Dash Ohio 2011
My wave began at 10am in Logan, Ohio. I woke the family up and made the 1hr 45 minute trip into the Hocking Hills(this should have been a warning) area of Ohio. They design these mud runs to send a wave of runner every half hour starting at 8am through 7pm. So, needless to say, Saturday saw a whole days worth of people. It stormed overnight, then 4 more waves of people ran the course this morning before I did. You can figure the conditions would be less than ideal, and they were.
At 10 my wave started. The corral was tight, so the first couple minutes were spent walking. Finally, I was able to jog. That didn't last long as the wooded path approached, it was a standstill. Once we got into the woods I looked up and saw the first hill, and couldn't see the end of it. At least 10% grade for the next .25 mile. In the mud. I was passing people at first, thinking, oh well, I'll get some hill work in. By the time I reached the top, I had abandoned all illusions I had of grandeur on this one. It went back down, just as steep, in the mud. It was like surfing, people were hitting the ground all around, it was a mess. Up and down the slippery slopes for a mile before hitting some of the obstacles. There was a pond with floating logs, barriers to jump over or crawl under. Rope walls, cargo nets, balancing planks. All spaced out in between the destroyed hills in the woods.
Eventually I hit the deck a few times myself, reserved myself to walking up some of the more slippery inclines and basically tried to make it through uninjured. The obstacles the event put in weren't a problem, mother natures on the other hand, was quite a challenge. I did the best I could, jumped over fire and swam in the mud, and finished the 3 miles in approx. 32:27. But by that point, I could care less about the time. I had fun, and got messy like back in childhood. That should make anyone smile.
I'll put a couple pics in my blog, if anyone is interested.
