Default Enon 5K

This is my neighborhood race. I run this route almost weekly. I've never placed in my age group in 2 years so far. It looks like I will wait another year. I'm so excited to help my son get through his first "grown-up" race. Even in the fun runs, he's a middle of the packer, but I will be so proud of him after this one. Mom needs to take tons of pics!

First off, I want to be clear just how enjoyable this run was. I only glanced at my Garmin to make sure little dude wasn't going out too fast. It was completely liberating. Anyway, we got there early to register because I missed the online cutoff, bonehead dad move. He had a huge smile when they handed him his t-shirt and he put it on immediately. I helped him secure the chip to his shoe, and we found a place where I could show him a couple stretches. After that we wandered into the starting area and Sully was super excited. He marveled at how many people had come and was anxious to get going. Eventually we were off! He was beaming, I felt so proud. It was his first race, so I paced him through the beginning so he wouldn't go out too quick and we settled into a comfortable pace. Everyone around us gave him so much encouragement along the way, it was so cool. He liked the mile tone from my Garmin and at about 1.25 he said to me, "Dad, I wish the were no hills in the United States!" Every runners' lament. So true, son, so true.

I tried to get his breathing regular as we approached the water station. I don't take water during 5K's but he wanted walk, so we grabbed waters and walked. He said he wanted to finish his water before we went again, I agreed then we headed towards the finish. He stayed strong and steady although he was no longer smiling. At 2.25 there is one last huge hill, and I showed him the arm swing I use to power up the hills and he fell right in step. At the top he realized we were close and started to speed up. I was concerned at first that he would burn out but he was intent on catching a couple younger ones ahead. Finally we passed them and turned the corner into the final .10. When Sully saw that finish line he took off! The kid still had a ton of kick left, had I held him down this whole time? I sprinted so we could hit the finish line together. Mom was there taking pictures, he was now beaming again, "I did it dad, I did it!" I was so elated, I think I still am. He didn't place in his group, but I feel next time he will. What a great morning!

Received a telephone call last night, apparently, there was a mix up with the scoring for the race. Sully came in 3rd in his age group! He's very excited to get the winners mug that they promised to deliver. Great job, Sully!
