Along these lines, are you supposed to lean back while running downhill? I know this sounds stupid but I live in very flat Florida. have a bridge run coming up and I have run up and down bridges before but that was before I was actually paying attention to actually having a strategy on running the hills. Before I was just crossing my fingers and hoping I didn't have to walk or puke This time I would like to try to think it through - wouldn't have thought to really pump my arms so thanks for that (usually I have to concentrate on relaxing my arms so pumping them is WAY different thought process!!) any advice will help!

Leaning back is like putting on the breaks. If i'm running large hills then I will naturally lean back put you should try to avoid it. I will be running on some steep hills this weekend. I'm going to be in Indiana at the boarder of Kentucky. The hills are many, and at extream angles. I will most likely have to be shoveled off the road at the end of my runs. On extream hills I will turn to the side and side step, ulternating sides as I go.

Don't lean back. Just run tall. Lots of runners think they need to lean into the hill, which leads them to bend at the waist, thinking they are "leaning into the hill". By running tall, the angle needed for a nice forward lean from the ankles is naturally created by the slope of the hill.
