Default Shoes for heavy trail runners . . .

Would like some suggestions on what type of shoe would have a lot of support and cushion. I run on gravel roads almost exclusively and my feet are always sore!

I train in Nike vomeros and race in Pegasus, the vomeros are really cusioned, the only reason i race in pegasus is becaue they fit my foot perfect and have little more "bounce" in them, (at least thats what it feels like) my suggestion, you can create shoes on the nike website and have them put trail running soles on them, try the Nikes first at a store to make sure you like them and they fit your foot right before you drop $135 ordering a custom pair from the nike ID website. You can do all kinds of things on the Nike Id website besides making the shoe a street running or trail running shoe, you can make them a more cusioned ride or firm, and you can have what ever colors you want pretty much. you can even have words stiched on them. check this out i just got my nike pegusus today in the mail.

Well, I guess you can take this for what it's worth (if anything), as I'm in the 155-160 pound range. So I can't say what I'd recommend for a heavier runner, just what I find comfortable.

I'm currently trail running in a pair Inov-8's and I really like them, but they're the only trail shoes I've run in. They fit very similarly to my Brooks. I've heard good things about Montrail and Vasque too. Dirt Diva is a Vasque fan, IIRC.

I do my trail running and road running in La Sportiva Crosslites. I have pretty much gotten away from normal running shoes since I bought crosslites a while back. They are really comfy and allow you to feel the trails. The only downside to the crosslites is that they have a very aggressive tread and are a minimalist shoe. I prefer minimalist shoes and love the way I can feel the trail.

How about feeling the rocks as your toe bashes into them or going over hard rocks? Or jumping down 3 feet to the trail below. His feet are already hurting. sounds like a hard plastic shank is called for.

The crosslites by Sportiva have a really good rock plate in the sole. I have not had any bruising or anything from rocks on the trails. Although, already sore feet can cause some issues for anyone. Sportiva does have a new shoe out called the Raptor that has really good cushioning and padding. I havent run in them yet, but they got really good reviews from several mags.
