Great advice! I'm 1/2 way through my 14 week training program for my 1st 1/2. I haven't yet really experimented with when I need fuel and what not. Right now my goal has just been to do it.
My pace is about a minute and half slower per mile than I was 2 years ago, because I let myself be lazy and gained back 30 lbs I'd lost. So right now, to me, winning will be in finishing the 1/2. I'm trying not to worry about the time. I was and I was experiencing too much anxiety over realizing I couldn't keep the 10:20 - 10:30 pace I kept in the last 10K I'd done.
My plan is to get through this my first 1/2 in April. Enjoy it and learn. Then I may do an innaugural 1/2 here in my hometown in May and THEN I'm going to start focusing more on doing some intervals & speed play and increase my pace.
I'm just really scared if I push it too much since I've only been steadily back at it for a little while that I could injure myself again.
The one lesson I've truly learned since I started running is to listen to your body when it gives you those little warning signs and twinges that are telling you to back off what you're doing.
