Default Slow Runner

Why is it so hard to find a running group that isn't a singles club?
I'm pretty new to running and would like to run out doors but am a slow runner and I know it will be hard to find a partner that is as slow as I am. I am currently training for a 1/2 marathon but am tired of running on the tread mill and don't like to run alone when out doors. I currently run 5.0mph on the treadmill but a finding that I run 4.5mph out doors. How does one find running partners?

if you have a local running store by you, ask the workers there, not a big chain store like in the mall but a mom and pop shop. owners and employees are really in tune with the running scene.

You could also see who finishes half marathons around the same time you do, ask a couple of them they want to run with you, let them know your not interested in singles runnings clubs that way they know your out for practice and not for dating.

I agree, search at your local running store, or enter a race and see who finishes around you, ask them if they want to run a day week or two days, people at small mom and pop running stores are there to run (as are people at races) first, anyone i have know that entered a race want to improve the next time, im sure people would be happy to try training with someone who was interested in running and not dating.

Also, do you have a YMCA near you? Perhaps you could sign up for a running class or something there. You would then meet runners and find out if any of them are interested in running outside of class. Just a thought.

Personally, I LOVE to run alone and so I haven't even looked for a running partner. Just a chance to get out there and think.

Thanks for the thoughts. I was talking to my massage therapist and he wants to start running again and asked to run with me. It's a small world.
Now if only the weather would get a little better! I may have to start running in the snow. Isn't there something that you can put on your shoes to run in the snow? I'm tired of waiting for the weather to break and I am feeling closed in at the gym. My husband wants to choke me about now!

They are called Yaktrax and cost about $20. Totally worth it in the northern winter weather.

Or just screw 15 or so 3/8" flat-head sheet metal screws into each shoe of some old shoes that you could use just for "snow runs". Avoid any gel or air pockets, if they have any. Put them in midsole and heel areas. It's a pretty common thing to do. I've seen a few blog entries lately showing their "handywork". Cheap solution, especially if you live in an area where you don't actually need them much, like me, living in Cincinnati. Live in Minnesota, or North Dakota???....that might make Yaktrax worth the investment.

Thats a totally cool idea. I live in Reno and sometimes the snow lingers in shady spots and is bit icy. What a creative and cost effective remedy. I looked into the "shoe chains" but actually your idea sounds more appealing to me. I will try it out if we get more snow this season. Never know with the high desert.
