Ive thought about this a lot, and i think its a lot of reasons that all lead back to something primal in each of us. the instinct to compete--- which thousands of years ago meant surviving. I think with all the modern inventions most people have lost that so when we start to run and get that "great run feeling" we dont really know why.. and nothing else feels like that, yet its hard to describe.
Whether you race or not your competing to try and better yourself and it feels good. even if you dont get faster, you will generally get healtier and feel better all while you are building endurance.
if you race, unless the world record holder, you know that there are people faster than you. you are competing against your own times, if you happen to pass people along the way, that feels pretty good too. back to survival mode. i dont a t-rex eating me.. right?
the health benefits are great, and make you feel great, physically and emotionally. to me that could possibly be that survival instinct. the more fit you are the more likely you are to survive right?
i could be way off on this but thats how i feel. maybe im on to something.
