Default McGlynn's 5k

ran a 5k today. the slow fade it was...

I went into this hoping to pr...I want to lick 21 soooo bad. My running this year so far has been average. I had a super 10 mile race in Jan that I pr'd in...I was hoping to do so again.

splits went like this
mile 1 7:00...good this is where I want to be...I feel good. not taxed.
mile 2 14:37...oh boy here we go...not good. Now I gotta try to run the last mile even faster to try to make up lost time.
mile 3.1 finish time: 22:36 off my pr by 30 seconds. sigh. super bummed.

won my age group tho...ten year age groups...old chicks 40-49. got a 25$ gift card to walgreens...that was sweet. and a free beer!

I do not do speed work on a weekly basis. but when I do them I can hang with 6:50-7's during 800's. I am open to suggestions and help if anyone has anything.
I am thinking mile repeats?? message me if you would like...

thank you for reading.
Karen

Your way faster then me! The free beer was a great gift. Maybe they should have given it to you before you started and you would ran faster two beers would have made you the the winner still, it must have been fun. I mean, beer and lots of pumped up people, and beer! You will run faster in other races, and there are always other races. Some times its not about the speed but the experience itself!

Im not even sure this is good advice but it helped me improve my time... i think.. you might already do this, and i know its not fun trying something new in a race, and this has nothing to do with training, its just what i happened to do when i ran my best 5k.

i was stuck at 20 for a long time... but I was always running solo. out wide, not with a pack, three weeks ago, i know the 3 people behind me the first mile were faster than me, ive raced against them., they let me run out front in the wind for the first mile and a half and then killed me bad.

I was regulary hitting my first mile at 5:50 or 5:55 and then always faded, but i was always running alone.

last week when i PR'd i tried to run a little different, first i warmed up only for about mile, really slow.. i would run 2 minutes, stop, run back, stop..
you get it. i usually dont start right up front, but this time i made it a point to start in the second row.
im pretty accurate when it come to knowing my pace.
it was windy and i thought, this week i am not going to run out front. i messaged you part of this story now that i think of it. how the 13 year old was running in stride behind me for half the race before he completely punked me out.

anyway i was also running behind somone for the first part of that race and it really did seem easier when i fell into that line instead of being in the front of it or off to the side. even the first half mile i found a line to run in, straight into a head wind, i didnt feel it but the people in front of me did.
try being 3rd of 4th in a line of runners that are doing just over 7, let them do the work. then at 1.2 or 1.3... GO! that little bit of extra energy you save might be all you need.

i hit mile 1 at 6:08, behind usual pace, but i was not tired at all and did not panic, i got faster at 2 and 3.
maybe its just me, but i use so much energy that first half mile, being nervous and excited and weaving, i think it helps to save a little energy anyway I can.

maybe thats me, im kind of a spaz sometimes, but i cant help it. its in my blood, my father is spaz, his father was a spaz, and i believe his fathers father was such a spaz that they they almost kicked him off the Santa Maria.

Maybe this will help maybe not. Im not even sure how effient drafting is while running. it could be in my mind.

No Joe you are right draft if you can get away with it. sometimes a dood will let me cause I'm a girl and not really a threat.
speed is not my thing. or maybe I'm really good at negative self 5k talk. I rarely do them as I hate them. but I feel the need to do them to keep myself on my toes. sometimes it is easy to get stuck in the avg LR pace.
I think maybe I got too comfy in mile 2...I didn't wear my garmin. and now wished I did. I'm gonna try again in two weeks. try try again. it is 5k season anyway right??

22 Minutes is still a very good time and you should be proud of it..When I started running a man my age 47 who runs 15 min 5k told me about speed that in order to run fast you must run fast not just in races but training also.I cant do speed work b/c of a bad hammy so I do alot of hills which is another form of speed work so try aliitle more hill work and 30 sec pick ups in your training and see how that works,I'm now at 18:02 pr for a 5k so I know this works for me..Good Luck and have Fun
